Size: approx. 0.5 cm long
Yellow starthistle gall flies (male and female?)on a yellow starthistle (yst) plants of Monte Bello Open Space Preserve in San Mateo County near Gate MB05 along Page Mill Road. YST plants at various flower bud stages, none with open blooms yet, some had flagged buds and dark spots on buds or stems. Two other yst biocontrol insects also found at same location - hairy weevils and false peacock fly.
