Caterpillar found on my front step - Cimbex americanus

Caterpillar found on my front step - Cimbex americanus
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
May 9, 2007
Size: @ 1.5 inches
We found this on our front step and the kiddos want to raise it. We need to know what it is so we can feed it properly. We are currently offering it leaves from every plant in the yard.

Moved
Moved from Cimbex.

Cimbicidae
Correct for Cimbex americana

It's a sawfly larva
See guide. Quite possibly Cimbex americana or something closely related to it. Looks like it's full-grown, so if it is Cimbex, some loose soil and leaf litter in its container would give it suitable conditions to pupate.
