American Lady Caterpillar - Vanessa virginiensis

American Lady Caterpillar - Vanessa virginiensis
Lost Trail, near crest of Santa Cruz Mountains, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, California, USA
June 13, 2015
Found by participant on a CNPS field trip along trail through chaparral bordered by Douglas fir forest. I wasn't told whether it was found on a particular plant or on the ground...but Shapiro(1) lists Gnaphalium and Anaphalis as host plants, and both may be present in the vicinity.
