Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla quadriguttata

Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla quadriguttata
Tulsa Zoo, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, USA
May 5, 2007
Size: ~ 10 mm
A co-worker saw this ant climbing around on a large cottonwood tree. She thought it was colorful and interesting and took a photo for me. I figured it wouldn't be too hard to track down, especially since it's got a distinct pattern.

D. quadriguttata
I'm very certain this is D. quadriguttata, it was in the right place before. This is a common species in my area.

There are a good deal of dasy
There are a good deal of dasymutilla that have the same color pattern and usually you have to have the specimen in hand to ID it. If Kevin Williams IDs this, then I would move it to species but I'd leave it in genus for now. although I do believe its in the correct geographic location. :)

Velvet Ant - A wasp, not an ant.
My guess would be Dasymutilla quadriguttata. Compare with existing image in guide.

Agreed
Thank you for the swift ID. I never saw the animal, so all I had to go on was my friend's photo. Hopefully I can catch sight of a few and get some shots.
