Crane Fly - Tipula longiventris

Crane Fly - Tipula longiventris
Henrico County, Virginia, USA
May 13, 2007
I found this crane fly on some forsythia leaves this morning. It was the largest and prettiest one I've ever seen.

It looks and sounds
like (from your description) a female Tipula longiventris . It has an elongated abdomen. But if this does not match the fly you remembered in your image then try take a look of the female of Tipula trivittata . My guess would be the former. - Chen

Thank you
Chen, the more I study the photos I have and compare them to others, the more I think it is a female Tipula longiventris. Thanks very much for your information and I.D. ~ Carol
