The Vestal - Cabera variolaria

The Vestal - Cabera variolaria
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
August 16, 2004
Came to porch light. Larva is known as Pink-striped Willow Spanworm. The ID of this one as Cabera variolaria is very iffy. Check these images and links to 3 other similar species in the Guide, and see what you think.

Not sure what it is....
Not sure what it is but I don't think it's The Vestal. The hind wings look broad and almost straight across where the vestal's hind wings seem to be very rounded. The fore-wings look to pointy as well and if you look closely there is a faint pm line. The vestal doesn't have a pm line. My first thought was maybe an emerald where the light might be playing tricks with the color. I don't know what it is but I don't think it's the vestal.

Foreshortening
Not sure about the ID but I'm not sure there is an issue with wing shape either. The angle at which this image was taken is a bit from in front of the head causing the subject to be foreshortened. That would make the forewings seem pointier and the hind wings shorter.

Nevermind.
I just read that there can be a line but I agree that the id feels uneasy.

Could be
But I share your doubts. The forewing shape might be variable, but it certainly looks different here than in the reference photos. This one has more "pointy" forewings.

other possibilities...
may turn up too, so I moved this one to the Geometrid Moths section for now.

C. variolaria
Update: I see that Bob Patterson has put a copy of this image under Cabera variolaria at MPG.
The forelegs on this specimen are definitely not dark gray, which rules out Protitame virginalis. See Guide page for distinguishing characteristics and links to other images.
Image moved from Geometridae to species page.
