Crane Fly - Tipula longiventris - female

Crane Fly - Tipula longiventris - Female
Eno River State Park, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
April 30, 1993
Size: circa 15-20 mm
Size perhaps 15-20 mm. (It was a large cranefly.) This is close to a photo identified as Tipula dorsimacula in Salsbury, Insects in Kansas, p. 379. (1) Length of that species is given as 15-25 mm. I am therefore going to file this under the (large) genus Tipula. That seems to be a relatively safe bet. The one image I see on the web identified as T. dorsimacula does not agree with Salsbury's photo, so I'm going to trust that source.

This also rather resembles Bruce Marlin's image identified as T. abdominalis.

Note added 7/20/05: Dr. Chen Young of The Carnegie Museum of Natural History has identified this as a female Tipula (Vestiplex) longiventris. Many thanks!

Ref: T abdominalis
Patrick, my T. abdominalis you reference above has been identified (also by Dr. Young) as Tipula dorsimacula.
New page can be found here: Tipula dorsimacula.
