Thank you. Am I doing this correctly? It appears that I can only add an image by dropping it into the ID request pool. Which makes sense, to avoid rank amateurs like me posting a mis-identified photograph.

You can post anywhere in the Guide...
...but unless you're absolutely certain, we'd recommend posting to ID Request. Mistakes that aren't caught can be perpetuated as others visit the Guide and assume the IDs to be solid.
