Two images, one of the whole fly and one showing spread wings and strangely-shaped abdomen. I would like help in identification.

I was going to say that it looked like Pyrgota maculipennis but then the abdomen looks different.

 
The female have an ovopositor
The female have an ovopositor, which makes them look very different from the males - there might be more species than maculipennis...

Hmmm. It looks like it. The "Freak Fly" pictures of Sam Houston show the strangely shaped abdomen too. Oh... and this came to the porch light at night. Thanks.
