Interesting insect, but what is it? - Platydracus
Howard County, Maryland, USA
May 14, 2007
Size: 20-25 mm
This was walking across a paved path between grassy areas near a large pond. It seemed to prefer walking rather than flying, though it could fly. It raised its abdomen like a scorpion when threatened.

Staphylinid
This is a Staphylinid beetle. Not sure what genus or species. Looks close to Ontholestes...I'm not saying that's what it is. There are plenty of beetle experts around.

Platydracus maculosus?
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. From browsing through the staphylinidae portion of the guide, it looks a lot like the images of Platydracus maculosus. Anybody know if it is?

I'm not sure if it is maculos
I'm not sure if it is maculosus, but it's for sure Platydracus.
