Mosquito - Ochlerotatus fitchii - female

Mosquito - Ochlerotatus fitchii - Female
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
May 21, 2007
I'm going to be living off-campus for the next school year, so some friends and I leased a house. I moved in today, and found the backyard to be an unmowed lawn teeming with mosquitos. Most were males (not surprising, I guess), but the females didn't seem to be interested in biting me. Reminds me of Ochlerotatus ... perhaps a canad*ensis?

Moved
Moved from Mosquitoes.

...
I am having some difficulty with this one as it seems to be going out past couplet 19....This is when you have to start looking at claw curvature and such. I would ask Omar, and I will put it to some of my labmates.
It is not Oc. canadensis though, as that one would have both apical and basal pale bands on the hind tarsomeres.

I would
put this in fitchii

Thanks guys
These mosquitos are swarming the lawn ... I'm glad we can put a name to them.
By the way, are mosquitos attracted to lights? I thought biting flies tend to avoid light sources at night (which is contrary to popular opinion), but these ones really swarm!

No,
the light attracts them. For example when we use our traps there is a light and CO2 that attracts the mosquitoes. Goes all the way back to when Sir Patrick Mason (late 1800s) used his Chinese servant, Hin Loo, as a human guinea pig to try and determine how filarial worms were spread. Sir Manson put a little light on top of the room to attract mosquitoes to bite Hin Loo while he was asleep
