I shot this thinking it was an unusual wasp and was amazed to find it was a beetle when I popped up the picture.

There is only one sp. of Necy
There is only one sp. of Necydalis in eastern US, N. mellita, so this and the other one from Il. are the same.

Reminds us of
Necydalis mellita, Yanega fig 175, but we'll look further. Yanega says "adults very wasplike in appearance, with constricted pronotum, very short elytra and long slender body. page 82

Definitely the genus.

The sexes, I suppose could have different orange distribution.
Appears to be a N. major out there as well.
