tiny fly - Toxomerus geminatus

tiny fly - Toxomerus geminatus
Canton, St Lawrence County, New York, USA
July 29, 2015
Size: tiny
I considered posting this to 'flies' but not knowing how common sightings of this one are in NYS, I wasn't sure how to make that judgment.

Also, just when I start to feel like I know some caterpillars, what I start coming across is spiders, and once I start studying spiders I start coming across a lot of insects interested in flowers. I'm pretty sure, based on the "one pair of normal wings" that this is a fly, and I've spent my 20 minutes browsing flies here, and I've not yet seen one that comes close to this little critter that in some shots looks like something a Disney artist sketched. It was one of many various flyers that were hanging out in the bee balm last week.

Common
These are common flies. They are overlooked because they are small. Larvae eat aphids and other plant-eating soft-bodied insects.

Thanks very much for this information.

A Syrphid Fly
