The Butterflies of Costa Rica and Their Natural History, Vol. I: Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae By Philip J. Devries Princeton Univ Press, 1987
Very complete guide for these families with lots of life history information. Good color photos of specimens. A little difficult to use as a field guide, which is was not designed to be, but the only thing available for the vast fauna of Costa Rica.

Simon and Schuster's Guide to Butterflies and Moths By Mauro Daccordi, Adriano Zanetti (Photographer), Adnano Zanetti Simon & Schuster, 1988
Out of print. Has many photographs arranged by zoogeographic region--this is its strength. Organization is odd, alphabetical by genus name within a region. This puts moths next to butterflies, etc. Many accpted English common names missing, even for widespread European and North American species. On the plus side, photographs are excellent and there is life history information. The (1) Eyewitness Handbook, Butterflies and Moths is a similar work and superior. This work might be useful as a supplement to field guides. (I did find a photo of a widespread neotropical hairstreak,

A World for Butterflies: Their Lives, Habitats and Future By Phillip J. Schappert Firefly Books, 2000
A coffee-table book with a brain: excellent photos and good discussion of scientific topics. There is a lovely description of the Pipevine Swallowtail mimicry complex in North America, with photographs of most species involved. Has an extensive bibliography, including books and journal articles.
Has an accompanying website, which has not been updated recently, but is still available.

Caterpillars of Eastern Forests By David L. Wagner, Valerie Giles, Richard C. Reardon, Michael L. McManus U.S. Dept of Agriculture, Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team, 1998
Excellent reference on caterpillars. Has 200-300 color photographs of moth (mostly) and butterfly caterpillars. Includes, mostly, species that feed on trees and shrubs. Does not have a key, but it is fairly easy to flip through the illustrations looking for a caterpillar if the markings are distinctive.
A version is available on the web:
Caterpillars of Eastern Forests
May be out of print. I got mine from the US Government Printing Office, www.gpo.gov. (I contacted the website above in 2003, but they had no more copies available.)
