See Dillon & Dillon paperback page 333 for this species. The hand in the photo belongs to Orland (Skip) Blanchard who has been studying North American beetles for about 30 years. I believe that the burrowing activity narrowed down the possibilites for him. Unfortunately for me, Skip just moved from NY to Florida literally today, so his use as a reference will be slightly more complicated going forward.
