Identification
metanotum noun - the upper surface of the metathorax, the last (most posterior) segment of the thorax. In most groups of insects, the metanotum is reduced relative to the mesonotum.
Remarks
The qualities of this (small) body part are often listed as key features in the taxonomy of the order Hymenoptera. (Ants, Bees, Wasps and Sawflies)
