Crane Fly Resting on Leaf - Tipula senega - female

Crane Fly Resting on Leaf - Tipula senega - Female
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
May 23, 2007
Female Tipula sp.?

This crane fly was skulking among the vegetation on the forest floor, but when I disturbed it it flew to this very nice pose on a leaf out in the open. It did not want its profile taken, however.

My estimate of the length of the body was one and one-eighth inches; not sure how close to reality this was.
