Chrysopilus

Chrysopilus
Penny's Bend Reserve, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 22, 2007
Size: 10 mm
What appears to be a Chrysopilus species, size estimated. This might be Chrysopilus fasciatus, which is the most common of that genus in the NCSU collection, but I've not seen any images identified as that species. At any rate, it looks similar to Chrysopilus ornatus we have here, but slightly different in the banding on the abdomen:

Or, maybe not--they look pretty similar now that I look at them, at least in the specimens thumbnailed.

Wow!
That is wonderful photograph of a beautiful bug. The wing veining shows so sharply, and the crystal fluff (= golden hairs) gleams so bright.

Thanks!
Thanks, Jack, this one did come out nicely. I think it was fresh, so the hairs were not worn. Amazing how pretty some flies are up close, isn't it!
