Wetland Fly - Bittacomorpha clavipes

Wetland Fly - Bittacomorpha clavipes
Prairie Oaks Metro Park- East floodplain of Big Darby Creek, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
May 24, 2007
Size: Legspan- 4cm
These (crane?) flies flew with their legs outstretched much like this individual. I think it was hoping for a mate to come by- since mating is what it was doing in the same spot when I came back an hour later. There were a number of these around a shallow oxbow wetland in the floodplain of Big Darby Creek.

Ptychopteridae
It isn't a Crane Fly (Tipulidae), but a Phantom crane Fly (Ptychopteridae).

Thanks
Thanks to both of you! Phantom is a good adjective for describing the way these guys fly and "perch".
