Garden Spider? - Trichonephila clavipes

Garden Spider? - Trichonephila clavipes
Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama, USA
August 15, 2015
We found many, many of these hanging in the trees in Gulf Shores State Park. They are large, probably 3-4 inches.

Golden silk orb weaver
This is a golden silk orb weaver. Gorgeous spiders with beautiful golden webs. They do, however, have a mild necrotic poison, so I recommend you be careful with them. They are not aggressive, and, while I’m not saying to try this, you could probably freehandle this spider. (Please don’t! I don’t want to be responsible for anything that goes wrong!)
