Gall on puccoon (Lithospermum sp.) - Neolasioptera species-on-lithospermum

Gall on puccoon (Lithospermum sp.) - Neolasioptera species-on-lithospermum
Black Hawk Point WMA, Allamakee County, Iowa, USA
July 31, 2015
MJ Hatfield and I have been noticing these stem galls on puccoon (Lithospermum sp.; L. canescens, I think) in remnant prairies in northeastern IA. This one is from 2015 and the one below is from 2014. I have never found them in abundance -- in fact, usually I only find one or two on any particular prairie -- so I have been reluctant to destroy one to get an idea of what's inside (e.g., moth vs. fly). Anyone have more information?
