Great Spangled Fritillary For Illinois In May - Speyeria cybele

Great Spangled Fritillary For Illinois In May - Speyeria cybele
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
May 25, 2007
Size: Approx. 3.5 in. wingspan
It wasn't until later when I started looking through the day's pictures that this image of the outside of this Great Spangled Fritillary caught my eye. In this closeup, you can see that the spots on it's wings really look metallic, probably the very thing that prompted it's "Spangled" moniker in the first place.

Nice close-up
Appealing angle and fine detail. (Gulf Fritillary is also into heavy metal.)

Yes, They Are Into Heavy Metal!
Their favorite group is Iron Butterfly!
