Bee-like Robber Fly - Laphria divisor

Bee-like Robber Fly - Laphria divisor
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
May 26, 2007
Today seemed to be the day for the big flies to be out and about. Rain fell earlier and it still was overcast this afternoon. And I think I have finally found another robber fly with this one.

Laphria
Wisconsin has 15 Laphria. So you are in a great spot for them. This is Laphria divisor. Several shots recently from the north on bugguide for this species.

We need shots of aeatus, huron from up there. I have never seen either species though they are described elsewhere.

Very nice fly photos, particularly this one
Haven't seen any robbers in SoCal yet, but am encouraged by your far-off find.
