Noctuidae, Stalk Borer on Oxeye False Sunflower, dorsal - Papaipema nebris

Noctuidae, Stalk Borer on Oxeye False Sunflower, dorsal - Papaipema nebris
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 26, 2015
Size: 19 mm
June 26, 2015: collected 3 larvae in stems of Oxeye False Sunflower, Heliopsis helianthoides. The plants were temporarily (June 2014) dug into my vegetable garden.
5 stems had borer holes. Larvae were invited into carrots
Big Question: Who figured out the carrot thing?
July 9, 2015: thought larva was dead in the open end of the carrot but it was an exuviae
July 18, 2015: frass scattered rather than dropped (the norm) out of the end of carrot
August 15, 2015: pupated (on or before) in the carrot, added some peat to the rearing container
August 17, 2015: took pupa out of carrot, removed carrot from container
August 29, 2015: adult emerged
ID confirmed by A. Brees
