Is this a caterpillar or some other larva? What does it turn into? I've never seen one like it - or this color. Also, is it poisonous/are the spines/hairs an irritant to the skin?

Thanks for the ID and the info on the hairs. A lot of these sightings I've posted have been from the cap I was working at this summer. I told the kids that the hairs on a caterpillar - especially one with hairs so big - could be an irritant and not to touch.

 
Yeah...
I would suggest telling the kids if they see any caterpillars with hairs or spines, that they should avoid any contact with them.
