Underground nest - Vespula alascensis

Underground nest - Vespula alascensis
Sequim, Clallam County, Washington, USA
September 11, 2015
Dozens of these yellowjackets were actively entering and exiting a hole. One, in photo 3, is carrying a small stone.
These are stills from a 4K video. I've posted one dorsal abdomen, a pair of faces and the stone-carrier.

In all three photos, the dark part of the background is looking down the hole, which was about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. See fourth image.

FWIW, the location is Robin Hill Farm, a Clallam County Parks demonstration farm, with cattle, orchard trees and a vegetable/flower garden. Several such holes were visible in a large grassy area.
