Butterfly cat? - Epistrophe

Butterfly cat? - Epistrophe
Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
September 10, 2015
Could be a butterfly but, despite searching everywhere, I could not id it. It was on a leaf of a low shrub in a weedy/shrubby field and beside a row of oaks and maples.

Moved from ID Request.

Looks to be the larva
of a Syrphid fly. Guessing it was about 10mm long??

Yes, at least 10 cm.
Thanks again, I sure had a mental block, didn't I?
