Slender Clearwing - Hemaris gracilis

Hemaris
This is a Hemaris gracilis. They are one of the less common Hemaris species.

One of the key things to look for is a pair of lateral bands just below the wing junctures. However, this isn't visible in your photo, but two other distinguishing characteristics to look for (which are visible) are the reddish color of the legs (pale/white in thysbe) and the smooth inner edge of the dark outer FW margin (which in fresh specimens of gracilis will have the thin border of white scales).

Also, up there in the north, thysbe flies a little later (June/July) whereas gracilis can be on the wing from March to August.

This is a beautiful photo and a fantastic specimen.

Breathtaking
So lovely.

Beautiful
Just beautiful.

Wow.
Just stunning! What a fresh specimen. Still has pale scales on body and wings....
