Wasp on English Ivy - Dolichovespula maculata
Virginia Foothills, Washoe County, Nevada, USA
Size: Approx. 22mm
Because of the nicely defined dark/light graphic nature of the insect we've been referring to these as a "Stormtrooper". They have been nourishing themselves on the small English Ivy blooms. This is the first season I have have seen these, as is the case with other insects as well as our winters continue to be mild.

looks like a bald-faced hornet

no BugGuide records for Nevada but there are records for the surrounding states.
