Yellow-banded Day Sphinx - Proserpinus flavofasciata

Yellow-banded Day Sphinx - Proserpinus flavofasciata
Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada
August 14, 2004
Proserpinus flavofasciata, caterpillar. One of the rarest Sphinx Moths. Almost exclusively Canadian - from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, and Alaska.
Young larvae are green, well camouflaged on their food plant (fireweed). Mature larvae are black, very conspicuos on food plant. Must be a biological reason; perhaps to absorb heat in a cool climate?
