Belzebul's Bee-eater (Robber fly) - Mallophora

Belzebul's Bee-eater (Robber fly) - Mallophora
Garden Ridge/San Antonio, Comal County, Texas, USA
July 23, 2006
I believe this to be Mallophora leschenaulti on a red yucca stem. Resembles others in H.R.'s Robber Fly web site and BugGuide. How are the Mallophora sexed? My goal is to someday get a photo of one of these with captured prey....

Now that you mention it
No one has photographed a male that I recall from down there. And I don't recall a prey shot either. Unlike Laphria, which can be wimpy killers and take ladybugs and cucumber beetles 1/10 th their size, Mallophora orcina are fearless. I suspect this species may take large prey as well.
