Flumble By? - Laphria affinis
Forum, Madison County, Arkansas, USA
September 20, 2015
Size: 2 1/2 "
At first glance this looks very similar to a common Eastern Bumble bee. However in closer examination, the legs are different, the eyes are different (round rather than elongated), the feet are different, and the thorax more slender and the wings appear longer.

Robber Fly
After looking over the pictures that are posted of the robber flies, I am seeing several that look almost identical. Thank you so much for your information. I have always lived in cities, and moved to rural AR this summer (I go SOOOOOO tired of the city). But I have been seeing all kinds of life that I have never seen before and am finding it fascinating. Now I know where to turn when I find something else.

Thanx again.

Cities
are for dining out and theatre. Not for day to day living. Welcome to the treeline.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

One of the
most impressive Laphria. Fast and often skittish. And the only one in most of the southeast visible in Sept. It is L. affinus.

Also a county record. Mainly because no one in the past collected robbers in the fall. Visible until Dec in some southern states. This is our eighth county for this species.

Moved for expert attention
Moved from ID Request.

Laphria, I expect. The experts should be able to give you a species.

Thanks for posting and welcome to BugGuide!

Robber Fly
One of the experts here is from Arkansas so this will be easy for him to id.
