Please look at Hyperaspis lateralis
I don't believe any other species can resemble this. I was hesitant to call it at first, but now that I've finished my Hyperaspis key and no other alternatives have shown up, I'm far more confident. This is not a well known species in the central or eastern states, though it is widespread in the west.

It matches Gordon fig. D as per http://www.discoverlife.org/20/q?see=I_JEL1285&res=md

I agree
I have Gordon's book and agree that it is lateralis. Thank you for your effort to identify the species.

Hyperaspis
Probably something the section I bigeminata group, recalls forms of lateralis but out of range.

If you have the specimen you can run it through the key in Gordon 1985.

Thank you
Thank you for getting the genus name. It will have to stay as Hyperaspis for now as I only have the one specimen and do not want to take a chance on destroying it by trying to dissect it.

Probably not necessary
Counting the antennal segments will help though.
