Platypedia areolata
The pale yellowish membranes at the base of the wings and the very hairy head and thorax are unusual, but it cannot be P. minor, which has shorter and broader wings (only twice as long as broad) and a blacker body. Of the two species in this genus that occur this far north, only P. areolata has redbrown front legs.

Platypedia:-)
One of the "wing-bangers" in the genus Platypedia. That bowed costal margin on the front wing is how I usually identify them, plus early emergence, overall small size. The males lack the percussion organs of most other cicadas, so strike their wings against the substrate to attract the opposite gender. This is a "calendar shot," Lynette. If we ever do a Bugguide calendar, this should make it in there:-)

Thanks Eric,
It was very cooperative and if it flew it only went short distances and stayed low enough to shoot again. It was much more cooperative than some of the NC cicadas.
