Pearl crescent? - Phyciodes

Pearl crescent? - Phyciodes
Chautauqua County, New York, USA

Size: Wingspan around an inch
It's definitely a crescent- my guess is a pearl crescent, but it's rather faded, so I'm not entirely sure.

Variations
I've seen Pearl Crescents in numerous variations around my area here in Southern Illinois. So, yours is probably just that, a Pearl Crescent variation. I notice it has wider white markings along the bottom edge of the wings, relative to looking at the picture's bottom, than typical Pearl Crescents. Check this one that I shot for a similar specimen: http://bugguide.net/node/view/108270.

You're right, that does look
You're right, that does look pretty similar- and I think my camera washed mine out when I took the shot, too, because it looked darker in real life. Thanks for the input -and that's a beautiful shot, by the way!

My guess is also pearl crescent
The butterfly lists for your county and the two adjacent in NY are very thin, listing just two crescents. This is one of them, but my thought is that there gaps in the listings.

I have only Western books, but Butterflies through Binoculars The West has a Pearl Crescent that looks like yours. It notes that "exact pattern is quite variable."

Probably someone else more knowledgeable will add their opinion, too. Oh, and welcome to Bug Guide!
