Proteoteras moffatiana or P. aesculana - Proteoteras aesculana

Proteoteras moffatiana or P. aesculana - Proteoteras aesculana
Winthrop Harbor, Lake County, Illinois, USA
October 11, 2015
Size: 9 mm
Came to a black light. Two sets of raised scales on forewing.

Moved
Moved from Gray-flanked Proteoteras.

They're actually not that tough, but there were so many misidentified aesculana on the moffatiana page that it was causing confusion. I've cleaned them up, so have another look at moffatiana now. It's larger, paler green, much more mottled, has broader wings, and fades to a whitish color. Aesculana is a dark yellowish green like this when fresh and fades to gray. If you compare the two pages now that the misidentified ones have been moved, I think the differences will be clearer. :)

Moved to Proteoteras moffatiana
Moved from ID Request.

P. moffatiana is difficult to distinguish from P. aesculana. I am placing based on the very green color, and on this is late for aesculana.

Welcome to BugGuide, James
I cropped your moth this time. In the future, you can really help editors and other contributors ID your moths by:
Crop to just the moth. Only editors can see the full-sized photo
• Check either Adult or Immature at the bottom of Submit Image page
• Orient lateral images facing right, as it makes comparing easier
Thank you,
Robert
