Golden Rover - Platydracus maculosus

Golden Rover - Platydracus maculosus
Brandywine, MD, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
June 3, 2007
Size: Approx. 2.5-3.0 cm
This beetle, with its golden mane and beauty, is a real insect-shark. It has grabbed maggots and adult flies around rotting meat and fights with the carrion beetles (the big N. americana guys--at least that's what it seems they're doing). It is one BIG rove beetle. I'm thinking it is Platydracus maculosus by process of elimination--but my identification skills are pretty wretched.

You got it.
Nice image, and correct ID:-)

Hooray!
I think it's the first one I've put up that I actually got right!

Thanks, Eric--and I love your field guide, by the way!
