Super Duper Looper - Phyprosopus callitrichoides

Super Duper Looper - Phyprosopus callitrichoides
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
June 5, 2007
Size: 1 inch
Wow!
Found at noon by a group ahead of me on a trail along the the swamp edge. About 85 to 90 deg F.
I just happened to have macro lens and tripod already set up.
Posed on a stick found nearby.
Was not feeding at the time found. was on a dead log.
Water oak, Chinese privet, elderberry, bald cypress, tupelo gum and more in the area.
About 1 inch long when looped, as shown. About 1.5 inches when not looped.
What looks like a tail in the photo is actually a pair of hind legs used when moving.
Shakes and "waves in the breeze" when moving.
Elaborate mimic of vine with thorns (?).

Great
image!
My first bugguide image was this species.

I should have known.
We have have lots of greenbrier, Smilax smallii, lanceleaf greenbrier. Including some right in the area where this caterpillar was found. Wow is its camouflage great for that plant. It really went all out. I just learned about greenbrier this winter from a LSU professor who was visiting. It stands out like a sore thumb in the winter. I started a PowerPoint story on this plant. What a fun addition this will be. I will have to look for more of these caterpillars. We know where they live. Thanks for the help.
