This is a species of Haploa, likely a variation of the Reversed Haploa moth, Haploa reversa, # 8109.

Thanks for your help. Thought it might be this genus, but I don't have much experience with these.

Actually I pulled the trigger too quick on your photo. I took a closer look at it and I believe that what you have there is more likely the species Haploa lecontei. I noticed the pattern on the distal area of the forewing and rechecked the whole thing again. Also, H. lecontei is very common in your area, whereas reversa, though on the New York Insect list, appears to be less common. Sorry about that.

 
Actually we like your first choice on this one better.
We were excited when we saw you had said reversa, which is what it looks like to us. But then you changed your mind!
