cicadas - Magicicada

cicadas - Magicicada
New Hope, Madison County, Alabama, USA
June 5, 2007
Size: 1 inch
I went to Hays Nature Preserve here in New Hope, Alabama yesterday and found these cicada shells on this one tree. I was also finding emergence holes in the ground. I believe these were periodical cicadas since they were quite a bit smaller than annual cicadas. Also there were a whole lot of them. Almost every leaf I looked on had a cicada shell sitting on it. Sometimes two or three per leaf. Also they were in the weeds on the ground as well. Could this have been a small emergence of periodical cicadas here in Alabama? Perhaps a new brood?

Magicicada sp., Periodical cicada (MOLTS) -???
Very odd!...and YES, it is possible they are periodical cicadas. In fact the molts seem to match the overall appearance and proportions of Magicicada (and do NOT look to be Tibicen sp.)

Did you by chance see periodical cicadas in 2007?

Spurious emergences do occur, but that is an odd year for north central Alabama (Huntsville area).
