cicadas

cicadas
New Hope, Madison County, Alabama, USA
June 5, 2007
Size: 1 inch
I went to Hays Nature Preserve here in New Hope, Alabama yesterday and found these cicada shells on this one tree. I was also finding emergence holes in the ground. I believe these were periodical cicadas since they were quite a bit smaller than annual cicadas. Also there were a whole lot of them. Almost every leaf I looked on had a cicada shell sitting on it. Sometimes two or three per leaf. Also they were in the weeds on the ground as well. Could this have been a small emergence of periodical cicadas here in Alabama? Perhaps a new brood?
