Very strange wasp-like insect - Strangalia

Very strange wasp-like insect - Strangalia
Lake Corpus Christi, San Patricio County, Texas, USA
May 28, 2007
I thought it very unusual that this insect flew with its legs curved back behind itself. It hovered quite a bit as it flew, but until I took the picture I thought that it was leaning its head back and flying with its legs out in front of it. As you can see in the picture, though, it's flying with all of its legs stretched backwards.
