Cuterebra sp. - Cuterebra ruficrus - female

Cuterebra sp. - Cuterebra ruficrus - Female
Cabeza Prieta NWR, Pima County, Arizona, USA
November 7, 2015
Size: 1 to 1.5"
I found this fly while birding on the border between Organ Pipe Cactus NM and Cabeza Prieta NWR in western Pima County. One of my companions thought that it may be a bot fly; after some research on this site I found a couple similar photos that were close but perhaps not exact matches (Photo#588945 and Photo#78130). Those appear to be relatively rarely encountered, so I thought this one might be of some interest.
From what I can gather, the red line in the eye makes it a rabbit bot, and the red legs narrows it down to Cuterebra mirabilis, C. princeps and C. ruficrus? I could be wrong though, as I'd never even heard of the genus until tonight!
For what it's worth, we did see several big jackrabbits out there - Black-tailed or Antelope, I assume (maybe both).

Cuterebra ruficrus female
If BG editors could add female to the description? We have a post from a few years ago of the male, so nice to add this first pics of the female and this is a nice series showing all sides. The spacing between the eyes ID's this one as female. Great shots for a hard fly to find! Jeff Boettner

Cuterebra ruficrus
Nice find. Yes, you studied up well. This is for sure a rabbit bot and it is Cuterebra ruficrus. The host would likely be Lepus californicus, ie the black tailed jackrabbit. A really nice find and not very common. Thanks so much for sharing it. Jeff
