Mystery orange and black beetle - Murgantia histrionica

Mystery orange and black beetle - Murgantia histrionica
Roseville, Northern California County, California, USA
June 8, 2007
Size: 10mm
This beetle first appeared in late April/early May in my backyard. They congregate mostly on my gladioulus and have spread around to the allysum that surrounds the glads. They started off small - about the size of a small ladybird - with orange coloring and black geometric patterns on their back. Their shape when young is very similar to a ladybird. However, after a few weeks they get much larger (about 10 - 12mm - and I'm using beads to guesstimate size). They flatten a bit. The bug pictured here is a medium-sized one. The big guys are shy and every time I try to get a closer look, they move away.

It's a harlequin bug
see guide page here. The alyssum ought to be their prime target, since it's in the mustard family, like many of the vegetables they attack.
