spilotus refers to the small dark scale clusters usually present on the forewings of unrubbed specimens (1).

Identification
The speckled forewing pattern usually distinguishes this species from all other Acrolophus. The speckling may not be visible in extremely dark or worn specimens (1)).
Range
Only definitely recorded from Florida (1).
Season
Apparently bivoltine: 23 March to 15 May and 29 July to 13 September (1).
