Red Admiral caterpillar rolling a nettle leaf around itself - Vanessa atalanta
Lucas County, Ohio, USA
June 9, 2007
Almost exactly a month ago, when I took this path last, I was swarmed by Red Admirals, so I assume these little beasties eating the nettles are their larva.

Several of the caterpillars, including this one, had climbed to the top leaf of the nettle plant and rolled it around themselves, using some silk.
