Carabus goryi - male

Carabus goryi - Male
Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Sevier County, Tennessee, USA
July 13, 2015
Size: 21mm
Keyed out to the subgenus Carabus.

I believe this to be Carabus goryi due to the interrupted elytral intervals being the same width and height as the regular intervals. Close ups of the elytral Stria will be added. I haven't seen C. vicinus aside from photographs, so opinions would be appreciated, thanks!

This specimen was collected by NEON using a pitfall trap containing a 1:1 ratio of water and propylene glycol.

Moved from Carabus.

You appear to be correct on subgenus Carabus.
The lack of transverse striations in the non-catenate intervals rule out C. serratus. (1), p.42

Carabus serratus vs. subgenus Carabus
I got to see Carabus serratus recently and I was surprised by how "serrated" the humeri were along the border of the elytra. What a fitting name! This is another way I'm able to separate this species from those of the Carabus subgenus (though I did use American Beetles to initially key out the subgenus).

Of the two species found in Tennessee:
Carabus goryi has the interrupted intervals the same width and height as "normal" intervals.
Carabus vinctus has the interrupted intervals wider and higher than "normal" intervals.

To me it seems like the former, let me know what you think.

Definitely goryi
Fo' sho.

Thanks
Thanks Thrasher!
