Insect fossil - Palaeopherocera scudderi

Insect fossil - Palaeopherocera scudderi
Florissant, Teller County, Colorado, USA
Fly?
Mr. Joseph Cancellare allowed me to photograph his large collection of insect fossils. We only had time to shoot a small part of his collection; which "consists of 2400 catalogued plants, insects, and fish fossils." For more information about his collection and fossil location go to:
http://www.epcc.edu/faculty/jvillalobos/Pages/SolarisResearch.aspx

Estimated age is 34.07 +/- 0.10 million years old.

Awesome... that looks very much like Palaeopherocera scudderi (Cockerell, 1909) a Therevidae.

Thank you Martin and John!
Spectacular! Incredible that you can match this fossil to an extant species.

Not extant, it is a fossil genus and species. I just sent you an email with the paper. cheers

There I go assuming too much...
Thank you Martin for sharing your paper with me. I am impressed with the beautiful illustrations in it; especially the drawings showing wing venation of insect fossils. Now your statements: "Only one true Therevidae (Palaeopherocera scudderi) is known from the Florissant shale of Colorado." and "The new genus Palaeopherocera gen. nov. is erected for Psilocephala scudderi Cockerell, 1909, the only true therevid known from Florissant shale." will have to be updated. I am glad that my photographs provided a second example for this species.
