This is the literature I'll be citing in my guide pages for Pepsines and Ceropalines. It obviously doesn't cover some species described after '57 but it's still the best comprehensive study. It has some really good keys. Might be hard to buy but most large university libraries should have it.

British Museum (Natural History), 1978
vii + 580 pp. and 4 colour plates. Provides keys to all the genera and species of New World Polistinae. Keys are poorly illustrated and in many cases only useful for experts. Key to Polistes difficult to use because it also includes the numerous Central and South American species. Separation of females of the widespread, hypervariable P. fuscatus from related species often inaccurate. Key to Polistes males does not work for most species.

An up to date monograph on the entire family for California, with keys, discussions, location citations and maps for each species. The entire book (304 pg.) is freely downloadable as a PDF file here. The format is much the same as the many earlier monographs in the "California Insect Survey" series.
