Band-wing Grasshopper - Camnula pellucida

Band-wing Grasshopper - Camnula pellucida
Oakland/Berkeley, Alameda County, California, USA
June 4, 2007
Size: 2-3" long
Is it possible to identify this insect more precisely than "band-wing grasshopper?" Found on a sunny day at edge of path at about 1100 ft. elevation. I did not see this individual fly, however a few days later and 1/2 mi. away I saw a similar looking individual fly - it had a muted yellow-green color in the wings.

Band-wing Grasshopper
Hi,
This is a 'Clear-wing Grasshopper' - Camnula pellucida. Related to Hippiscus, Cratypedes, Xanthippus, etc. but smaller, with nearly colorless wings

Clear-winged Grasshopper!
Thank you, David. After consulting Powell's "California Insects," I have learned that this is one of the most abundant grasshopper species in California! Kay

Band-wing grasshopper
Thanks, Eric. I was so focussed on getting a sharp picture, I didn't even notice this insect was missing a leg! Kay

Maybe....
This is most likely a species of Xanthippus or Cratypedes. Would help if it had its other hind leg, as coloration of the hind tibia is often helpful in getting to genus, or even species.
